The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has issued a public notice regarding a packet of “sweet areca nut” being sold in local shops with a label claiming it is “approved by MFDA.”

The authority clarified that while it grants permits to food manufacturers, processors, and service providers, it does not approve or certify individual food products. It stated that labels carrying phrases such as “approved by MFDA” or “MFDA permitted” are misleading and may cause confusion among consumers.

MFDA warned that such labelling practices are not permitted and that legal action may be taken against businesses that falsely claim MFDA approval. The product in question was reportedly distributed by Yas Investment.

The authority further noted that under the Food Safety Act, a code of conduct for food production and sale was introduced in 2024 to promote safe practices and ensure regulatory compliance. MFDA urged all food businesses to strictly follow these guidelines and refrain from making unauthorised claims on product packaging.
