The sustainable pole and line method of tuna fishing, a longstanding practice in the Maldives, is assuming heightened importance amidst the challenges posed by climate change and shifting fish migration patterns, according to Ahmed Shamah Rasheed, CEO of the Maldives Industrial Fishing Company (MIFCO).

Speaking at the 18th INFOFISH World Tuna Trade Conference in Thailand, Shamah underscored MIFCO’s commitment to sustainability, rooted in the traditional fishing techniques of the Maldivian people.

“At MIFCO, our ethos of sustainability is deeply intertwined with the pole and line method,” he stated. “This centuries-old technique not only embodies our cultural heritage but also reflects our dedication to environmental stewardship.”

Shamah emphasised the benefits of pole and line fishing, noting its ability to minimise by-catch of endangered species such as dolphins and manta rays, while also reducing adverse impacts on marine ecosystems by avoiding damage to the ocean floor.

Highlighting the challenges posed by climate change, Shamah pointed to rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and alterations in tuna migration patterns as key concerns affecting fishery productivity. He stressed the urgent need for sustainable fishing practices in mitigating these effects.

During his presentation, Shamah provided insights into MIFCO’s operations, including its product range and global certifications such as EU compliance, ISO, and Halal certificates. He also extended an invitation to investors to support MIFCO’s mission by investing in canneries, cold storage facilities, and collection vessels, in line with the growing demand and potential of the Maldivian fishing industry.

The INFOFISH World Tuna Trade Conference & Exhibition, renowned as the largest gathering in the global seafood industry, serves as a platform for companies and associations involved in the processing and marketing of fish products to come together and discuss pertinent issues.
