The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has officially inaugurated a new ice plant and storage facility in Meedhoo, Dhaalu Atoll.
The facility, capable of producing 30 tonnes of ice per day and storing up to 50 tonnes, was developed to support the country’s fishing industry.

MIFCO was awarded the contract for the construction of the Meedhoo ice plant on 24 September last year. The facility was inaugurated by the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, at a ceremony held in Meedhoo on Wednesday. The event was attended by MIFCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General (Retd) Farhath Shaheer, the Head Imam of the Islamic Centre, Sheikh Mohamed Latheef, and the President of the Meedhoo Island Council.
The government is establishing ice plants across the Maldives to improve fishermen’s access to ice. The Meedhoo facility forms part of a wider project to set up ice plants on 11 islands.
The introduction of additional ice plants is expected to significantly increase the national ice production capacity for the fishing sector. Ice plants have already been established on 25 islands, and the government is also planning to transfer the management of ice plants currently operated by FENAKA Corporation Limited to MIFCO.
