The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced that 311 tonnes of fish were weighed across various atolls on the first day of the new year.

MIFCO has recently begun publishing detailed fishing statistics, which include daily catch numbers, weighing locations, and the number of vessels operating in each area. This initiative aims to provide insights into the most productive fishing regions, the company stated.

According to MIFCO, Huvadhoo Atoll recorded the highest fish catches on 1 January. In the southern part of the atoll, 22 boats weighed 92.6 tonnes of fish, while in the northern part, 20 boats brought in 80.7 tonnes.

Lhaviyani Atoll also showed significant activity, with 15 fishing boats weighing 58.1 tonnes of fish. Although no fish were sold directly to the Felivaru facility, three boats anchored at Felivaru Harbour received the catches.

The Kooddoo facility recorded the highest single location total, with 80.7 tonnes weighed directly and an additional 221.1 tonnes weighed to boats. In total, 79 vessels contributed to the 311 tonnes reported by MIFCO.

The company highlighted its commitment to timely payments, announcing that all pending payments to fishermen from 2024 have been cleared. MIFCO operates under a policy of settling payments within 48 hours of purchase.

Despite challenges in the fishing industry last year, MIFCO’s recent data indicates a positive trend. While mid-December catches fell below 100 tonnes daily, the daily average rose above 200 tonnes from 26 December onwards.
