The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) announced plans to establish three new ice plants in Dh. Ban’didhoo, Dh. Meedhoo and Sh. Funadhoo

MIFCO has called for proposals for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to develop a 30-ton seawater tube ice plant with 50 tons of cold storage in all three islands.

The submission deadline is 14th October at 1:00 pm, with bids to be opened on the same day at 2:00 pm.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources awarded the contract to MIFCO on 24th September. These three ice plants are being developed using government funding, with a total budget of MVR 24 million allocated from the government’s public sector investment programme (PSIP). The project is expected to take eight months to complete.

MIFCO noted that the local councils have provided the land for the development of the ice plants free of charge, demonstrating the support and importance given to the fishing community by the island councils.

The establishment of these ice plants is part of ongoing efforts to address the challenges fishing vessels face in accessing ice, according to the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.

Additionally, the government is taking steps to further develop the fishing industry by enhancing MIFCO’s capacity and offering various services to fishermen.
