The government has entered into an agreement with Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) to expand job and internship opportunities for individuals with disabilities, as part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity in the workforce.

Under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding, MIFCO will offer employment and internship placements to people with disabilities, including those under state care and individuals facing financial hardship. The Ministry of Social and Family Development stated that tasks and responsibilities assigned through this initiative will be tailored to the physical capabilities of the individuals involved.

According to the Ministry, the agreement forms part of a broader strategy to reduce societal dependency among persons with disabilities and foster a more inclusive and empowered community. Since assuming office in November 2023, the current administration has launched multiple initiatives aimed at improving access to employment for individuals with special needs and ensuring equitable opportunities in the workplace.

Among the key policies introduced is a regulation publicised last year, which outlines the framework for ensuring equal employment rights for people with disabilities. The regulation is designed to protect their right to work and support their integration into the workforce.

In addition, the Ministry has collaborated with Care Society Maldives to deliver a two-month training programme for jobseekers with disabilities. The programme focuses on preparing candidates for the work environment and equipping them with the necessary skills for employment.
