Member of Parliament for Galolhu South, Meekail Naseem, has pledged to restructure the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and address internal divisions as he campaigns for the party’s chairmanship.

Speaking at a rally titled “For the Unity of MDP,” held at a junction near Jamaaludeen School last night, Meekail said the party’s support had been “leaking” following internal fractures and vowed to reverse the trend.

“I have come out for this election to organise this party… I will organise it on a massive scale. I will put this party back together,” he said.

Referring to a recent visit to Alif Alif Atoll, Meekail said grassroots members expressed concern over the party’s declining cohesion and influence. He said his candidacy aims to restore unity and strengthen the party’s structure.

Meekail also criticised the practice of taking internal party disputes to court, saying such matters should be resolved through dialogue within the party. He added that he is not seeking the chairperson role as a stepping stone to other positions, and instead wants a mandate directly from party members.

“I do not want to be someone who takes this election to court when there are solutions that can be found within the party,” he said.

He further pledged to remain transparent with party members and rejected what he described as inconsistent positions among his opponents.

“I will not be the person who says one day that Fayyaz Ismail removed 39,000 members, and the next day calls to bring him to power,” Meekail said.

In addition to Meekail, former president Mohamed Nasheed, and Ibrahim Mohamed (Wardu) are also competing for the MDP chairperson position.

Nasheed and Meekail have both been actively campaigning, presenting competing agendas for the party’s leadership. Nasheed’s campaign, titled “Big Change,” centres on broader national reforms he says can be achieved with the MDP in government. Meekail, meanwhile, has focused on restoring trust between the party and its general membership, positioning his bid around internal renewal.
