Minister Calls for Global Support to Tackle Climate-Related Health Challenges

Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, urged major nations to provide support to vulnerable countries in addressing health challenges exacerbated by climate change at the 156th session of the World Health Organizationās (WHO) Executive Board in Geneva, Switzerland.
The session, held from 3rd to 11th February 2025, serves as a platform for member states to discuss global health priorities and set the agenda for the upcoming World Health Assembly.

In his address, Minister Nazim reaffirmed the Maldivesā dedication to equitable health services under the āHealth for Allā initiative. He emphasised efforts to enhance Primary Health Care (PHC) to ensure accessible services for all citizens.
Highlighting the nationās forward-looking approach, the Minister announced plans for future āGreen Smart Hospitalsā. These facilities aim to be environmentally friendly and equipped with modern technologies to mitigate environmental risks and improve health services.
Minister Nazim expressed concern over the health impacts of climate change, noting that increased rainfall and flooding have led to a rise in disease outbreaks. He stressed that, despite advancements in the Maldivesā health system, these environmental challenges pose significant obstacles to service delivery. He urged WHO member states to assist vulnerable countries in overcoming these issues.
Additionally, the Minister highlighted the Maldivesā recent ban on electronic cigarettes, a measure implemented to protect youth from smoking and reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the organisationās officials for their ongoing support in addressing health challenges, including those related to climate change and health emergencies.
