Minister Discusses Sustainable Plan to Preserve Utheemu’s National Monuments

Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim has held discussions with the Utheemu Island Council to establish a sustainable plan for the preservation and protection of national monuments in Utheemu, Haa Alifu Atoll.
Utheemu, the birthplace of national hero Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, holds significant historical and cultural value. During the meeting, the minister commended the island council and the local community for their ongoing efforts to safeguard the island’s heritage sites.
He emphasised the importance of preserving and maintaining such sites across the country while also exploring opportunities to generate revenue for local councils through cultural tourism. He noted that Utheemu has the potential to become a key destination for cultural tourism.
Utheemu Council President Abdulla Rasheed outlined the primary challenges in maintaining ‘Utheemu Ganduvaru’, the former residence of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu. He highlighted the need to increase the current entrance fee of USD 1.30 for visitors and called for improved cleaning and security measures at the site.
