Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has stated that the Maldives is facing a growing diabetes epidemic, urging citizens to embrace early detection and adopt lifestyle changes to reduce the disease’s serious health risks.

The minister described diabetes as one of the nation’s most pressing health challenges, highlighting its increasing prevalence alongside other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). He emphasised that many cases are closely linked to daily lifestyle choices and stressed that structured routines can significantly reduce complications associated with the condition.

The minister encouraged the public to focus on prevention through sound health practices, including regular exercise and balanced nutrition. Early testing and timely medical consultation were highlighted as central strategies to minimise risks, with proactive screening described as essential for maintaining health and preventing severe complications.

To coincide with World Diabetes Day on 14 November, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and Hulhumalé Hospital conducted an outreach programme in Hulhumalé, visiting households to raise awareness about diabetes, identify symptoms, and provide guidance for those living with the condition.

Health experts noted that people with diabetes must carefully manage their daily routines to control blood sugar levels. Regular medical tests are required to monitor current health status, assess organ function, and determine the effectiveness of ongoing treatment. Maintaining disciplined eating and drinking habits, combined with consistent physical activity, was emphasised as crucial for safely managing the disease.

The ministry called on all citizens to prioritise regular testing, adhere to prescribed medication, and incorporate healthy habits into daily life to reduce the impact of diabetes across the country.
