Minister Mariya Outlines Efforts to Expand Finance for Farmers at FAO Conference

The Minister of Agriculture and Animal, Dr Mariyam Mariya, has stated that local farmers in the Maldives are benefiting from improved access to affordable finance under the current administration.

Dr Mariya made these remarks during a high-level roundtable on the Four Betters for Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries and Landlocked Developing Countries, held as part of the 44th Session of the FAO Conference.
Addressing the conference, the Minister highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance productivity in agriculture and food production across the Maldives. She outlined initiatives to promote precision farming and training in Maldives Good Agricultural Practices, alongside the sustainable use of resources.
Dr Mariya emphasised the importance of strengthening logistics and transportation networks between islands, in addition to improving access to affordable financial services to drive transformation within the agriculture and food sectors.
The Minister noted that multiple efforts are being made to create more opportunities for women and youth in agriculture. She explained that the government has established a dedicated fund to support women-led businesses that apply modern technologies to advance sustainable agriculture.
Further plans include the provision of training for women in climate-resilient agricultural practices and modern farming techniques. Dr Mariya reiterated the government’s commitment to facilitating better access to farmland and agricultural resources to ensure equal opportunities for women in the agricultural sector.
