Minister Mariya Temporarily Takes Over Agriculture Ministry
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Dr Maryam Mariya, the Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, to temporarily oversee the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.
The move comes in response to the resignation of Dr Aishath Rameela, who stepped down due to health issues.
The President’s Office confirmed Rameela’s resignation yesterday, attributing her decision to her ongoing treatment for advanced-stage cancer. Rameela, who had previously sought medical care abroad, cited her health as the primary reason for relinquishing her role.
President Muizzu expressed deep appreciation for Rameela’s dedication, commending her resilience in the face of personal challenges.
“It has been an honour to have such an active and dependable individual in the cabinet. I am confident she will continue to serve the Maldives in other capacities,” he stated, while extending his well wishes for her recovery and strength during this difficult time.
Rameela’s public service career spans over three decades, beginning in 1990 as a nurse. Prior to her appointment as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, she served as State Minister of Health, demonstrating her long-standing commitment to national development.
Dr Mariya’s temporary oversight ensures continuity in the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare as the government navigates this transition.
