Minister of Health Affirms Right to Smoke-Free Environment
Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has highlighted that everyone has the right to live free from exposure to tobacco smoke.
He made this statement during an event held on Saturday evening at the Artificial Beach area, organised by several United Nations agencies and local associations to mark World No Tobacco Day.
Minister Nazim emphasised the importance of recognising how smoking infringes on the rights of non-smokers, noting that many individuals are involuntarily exposed to tobacco smoke due to the actions of smokers. He pointed out that this exposure compromises their right to good health and called for stronger protections to safeguard the rights of non-smokers.
The Minister also outlined the Maldivian government’s recent initiatives to combat tobacco use. These include efforts to train healthcare professionals and expand access to cessation treatments. For the first time, treatment to help people quit smoking has been made available through the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha.
During the event, the Minister of Health presented a special award recognising individuals or groups for their contributions to tobacco control efforts.
World No Tobacco Day, observed annually on 31 May since 1988, was established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to raise awareness of the health, social, and economic consequences of tobacco use. This year’s theme is “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.” The day aims to promote stronger tobacco control policies worldwide.
