Minister of State Announces Stricter Requirements for Future Teachers

MV+ News Desk | July 27, 2023

People without a four-year degree will be barred from pursuing a career as teachers under the new Teachers Registration Rules, as announced in a recent press conference by Minister of State Athiya Naseer.

The new regulations are set to take effect from 2029, after which individuals aspiring to become teachers must complete a four-year degree in teaching following a face-to-face model.

The decision has sparked discussions as many institutions presently offer three-year teaching courses, with some providing online and blended learning options. However, the upcoming mandate aims to elevate the standard of teacher training to meet the desired level set by the Ministry of Education.

Athiya asserted that the Ministry would collaborate with colleges and universities to establish the benchmarks for a pre-service teaching course.

The proposed changes seek to enhance the quality of education by transforming the training of teachers starting from the next year, with the intention of implementing the new four-year face-to-face model for teaching from January 2025.

The inaugural batch of students pursuing the revised course is expected to graduate in January 2029 and subsequently enter the teaching profession.

Minister Athiya emphasized that the objective behind these alterations is to ensure that future teachers receive the necessary training and qualifications, thereby fulfilling the specific requirements of the field.

Students pursuing the four-year teaching degree will be eligible for their teaching licenses upon graduation, with the revised rules slated to come into effect after 2028.
