Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has urged intensified global cooperation to enhance financial support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

He made these remarks while delivering the national statement on behalf of the Maldives at the high-level segment of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, held in Cali, Colombia, this week.

In his address, Minister Thoriq highlighted the Maldives government’s commitment to establishing three biosphere reserves and a nature park in each atoll before 2028. He also referenced President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s initiative to plant five million trees within this timeframe.

The 16th Conference of the Parties aims to review the implementation of the Convention and address the need for Biodiversity Protection at the global level. Discussions will include evaluating the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and its integration into the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans of participating countries.

During his address, Minister Thoriq touched on the ongoing review of the national biodiversity strategy and action plan, which would align national efforts with international biodiversity targets.

Thoriq noted the challenges faced by small island developing states in protecting ecosystems and conserving biological diversity and the need for financial assistance to implement and achieve the goals laid out in the convention.

This conference brought together Ministers of Environment and Heads of Delegations from various nations.

The conference participants will explore systems for monitoring wildlife conservation efforts and enhancing funding for such initiatives, as well as the development of a multilateral framework for the equitable distribution of benefits derived from digital sequence information.
