During the event, the Minister announced the formal launch of collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and UNEP on a newly approved USD 25 million Green Climate Fund (GCF) project, Toward Risk-Aware and Climate-resilient Communities (TRACT). The project is designed to equip Maldivian communities with advanced climate risk information, strengthen local adaptation capacity, and introduce resilience-building measures tailored to island contexts to enhance early warning systems.

Highlighting the Maldives’ vulnerability as a small island developing state, Minister Thoriq underlined the urgency of investing in weather and climate data infrastructure, integrating science and technology, and strengthening regional cooperation to improve the accuracy and timeliness of early warnings.

The Sixth Forum of Ministers and Environment Authorities of Asia Pacific, taking place from 26 to 29 August 2025 in Fiji, provides a platform for governments, intergovernmental bodies, and stakeholders to discuss environmental priorities across the region. Outcomes of the forum will feed into the seventh session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), scheduled for December 2025.
