Minister Unveils New Generator Plan to Solve Addu City Power Failures

MV+ News Desk | July 30, 2024

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, has announced the acquisition of a new generator for Addu City to address ongoing power failure issues and assured that a resolution will be implemented by August.

Responding to a parliamentary inquiry during session, Thoriq highlighted that the Central Power Station in Addu City is in poor condition, attributing the neglect to the previous administration led by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Thoriq stated that the former government had failed to purchase the additional generators needed for the power station and had not adequately maintained the existing ones.

The Minister explained that the connected islands in Addu City require 12 megawatts of electricity during peak hours, while Hithadhoo, the main administrative district, currently has 30 generators. These generators have a total capacity of 26.8 megawatts, but only 14 megawatts are being produced due to the malfunctioning of five generators.

To address the problem, the current administration has acquired a new 1.5-megawatt generator, which is expected to be installed within the next month. Additionally, spares for three more generators have been purchased, with plans to make them operational in the coming month.

Thoriq also noted that two failed 2-megawatt generators will be overhauled and brought back into service within the year, providing a short-term solution to Addu’s electricity challenges.

An emergency motion was submitted to parliament last week concerning the power failures in Addu, with members from both the opposition and ruling parties recognising it as a significant issue.
