Olhuhiyaa was created to care for stray cats found on the streets of Male’ City. The shelter occupies a 5,000-square-foot plot in Hulhumale’ and was officially inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in November 2024.
On 26 February, the Male’ City Council officially handed over the shelter to the Ministry. However, the Ministry was forced to delay the shelter’s operations to carry out essential renovations, such as reinforcing the enclosures.
The Ministry confirmed on Sunday that the renovation work has now been completed, and the shelter is currently providing care for 30 cats.
The Olhuhiyaa shelter features a quarantine area, a veterinary clinic, a laboratory, and a pharmacy stocked with medicines specifically for cats, as well as designated living spaces for the animals.
