The Ministry of Social and Family Development has announced plans to expand senior citizen centres across the Maldives, with new facilities to be established in Laamu, Raa, Dhaalu and Shaviyani atolls this year.

The expansion is aimed at addressing loneliness among elderly citizens and providing safe and inclusive spaces where senior citizens can socialise and engage in meaningful activities. The centres are intended to support emotional wellbeing and encourage active participation within communities.

Senior citizen centres currently operating in Malé and Hulhumalé have been functioning successfully, hosting cultural events, recreational programmes and friendly competitions that promote social interaction and a sense of belonging.

The initiative has received strong interest from local island councils, with 74 councils expressing willingness to establish similar centres in their respective islands. The Ministry has highlighted the importance of collaboration with councils to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the programme.

Under the proposed arrangement, local councils in the atolls will manage the daily operations of the centres, while the Ministry of Social and Family Development will continue to provide technical support and training to facilitate proper implementation.

The expansion of senior citizen centres is in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to protect and empower senior citizens and to ensure their continued engagement and contribution to society.
