Operation Kurangi was first launched on 2 May of the previous year as part of efforts to address the issue of illegal migration in the Maldives. To date, the operation has gathered biometric data from 52,495 foreign nationals, including 30,426 individuals residing in the Malé area and 22,069 in other regions of the country.

The operation involves the collection of fingerprints from foreign workers to ensure they are legally residing and working in the Maldives in compliance with the country’s laws and regulations.

Biometric data is gathered at local council offices, where dedicated collection points have been established. Minister of Internal Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan previously stated that the data collected would contribute to the creation of a centralised register of foreign workers.
