Ministry Moves to Digitise IBAMA Data for Secure Storage
The Ministry of Social and Family Development has announced that the digitisation of its data systems will support the secure storage of information collected under the Ijthimaaee Badhahi Madhadhuverin (IBAMA) programme, a nationwide community-based initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable children and families.
IBAMA operates with a strong emphasis on community engagement, encouraging local participation in identifying and addressing social issues across the Maldives. According to the Ministry, the programme has already been implemented in all but three atolls, with plans in place to expand it to the remaining atolls by the end of the year.
The update was shared with the Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee. During the committee session, the Ministry’s Lead Social Worker, Akram Hassan, explained that the digitisation process was prompted by concerns about the handling and storage of sensitive information. He said the Ministry is now developing a digital system to ensure that data collected through the IBAMA programme is stored securely and efficiently.
The new system will allow IBAMA members based in the atolls to input data directly and instantly, enabling more timely and coordinated interventions. Akram also outlined that the Ministry is in the process of gathering data for the development of an assessment tool. This tool will evaluate the vulnerabilities of individuals and families using indicators such as financial status and educational background.
He acknowledged that while progress is being made, developing a comprehensive system of this scale will take time. However, he noted that meaningful results can be achieved through sustained collaboration among all stakeholders.
