The Ministry of Education has instructed all schools to implement a new programme titled “Bingaa”, aimed at improving student behaviour and instilling positive values.
In a circular issued to schools last Thursday and signed by Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu, the ministry said the programme is designed to nurture good qualities and habits among students.
The circular emphasised that the vision of the National Curriculum is to prepare every child for life by developing their knowledge, skills and character through the education system. In line with this vision, schools have been instructed to prioritise nurturing students who are compassionate, kind, respectful and responsible.
The Bingaa programme will run throughout the year and will be organised around monthly themes. It will be implemented in all schools with the participation of teachers, parents and the wider community, with the aim of instilling strong values and positive habits in students. A special committee has been established by the Ministry of Education to oversee the programme. The committee will be responsible for sharing activities with schools, supporting implementation and evaluating progress. The first monthly theme will focus on gratitude.
Schools are required to carry out activities under the programme to familiarise students with religious duties, moral values and good habits, and to instil virtues such as respect, responsibility, cleanliness, care and compassion. The programme also aims to encourage a love for prayer and nurture prayerful habits among students. Each month’s theme and related messages will be displayed within school premises, with a special school assembly held to introduce the theme and provide students with opportunities to discuss it.
Additionally, schools will organise island-level panel discussions or large community events connected to the monthly theme. Parents and students will be informed about home- and community-based activities linked to each theme, and schools are encouraged to share related activities on their official social media platforms.
