The Ministry of Gender issued a formal statement addressing these concerns, underscoring the government’s commitment to resolving the longstanding issue of social worker wages. As of 01 May 2023, a professional framework for social workers has been instituted to address these concerns.
Social workers in the ministry earned an average monthly wage of MVR 15,000, including overtime pay. However, in a significant development, the government has implemented a substantial increase of 67 percent, elevating the average monthly income for social workers to MVR 21,585, without any consideration for overtime pay.
This change has notably benefited 137 social workers employed within the Gender Ministry, aligning their salaries with the newly established structure. As a consequence of this shift, 33 employees, formerly categorised under GS rank four within the Civil Service Commission, have been transferred to the higher public service rank five.
Ten of the public service rank five employees, who are concurrently pursuing advanced education in the field, are set to receive promotions upon the attainment of their professional qualifications.
The remaining 23 individuals within this rank will undergo harmonisation of their salaries and transition into the new structure as soon as they acquire the requisite field certificates.
