Ministry Opens Applications for Undergraduate Engineering Scholarship in Bangladesh

The Ministry of Higher Education, Skills and Labour Development has announced the opening of applications for an undergraduate engineering scholarship for the 2025–2026 academic year at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

According to the announcement published in the Government Gazette, the programme offers Maldivian students the opportunity to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering in Bangladesh. The scholarship is open to candidates who completed their GCE A-Level examinations in 2024 or later and meet the academic and eligibility requirements set out by both the Ministry and BUET.

Applicants must have achieved a minimum of grade ‘B’ in five subjects at GCE O-Level, IGCSE or SSC examinations, including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English. In addition, candidates are required to have obtained at least grade ‘A’ in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at GCE A-Level.

The Ministry stated that applicants must also fulfil any programme-specific requirements outlined in the BUET information sheet or published on the university’s official website. Candidates who previously obtained education loans through the Ministry or the former Department of Higher Education must not be in default and must be repaying their loans in accordance with agreed terms.

The programme applied for must be of a higher academic level than the applicant’s current qualification. Applicants must also not be enrolled, at state expense, in another programme of the same academic level.

As part of the application process, candidates are required to submit certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts, a copy of both sides of a valid Maldivian national identity card, and any additional documents needed to demonstrate eligibility. Certificates obtained overseas must be validated by the Maldives Qualifications Authority. Applicants with service bonds must submit a letter from the relevant institution confirming release to undertake the programme, along with documentation of service rendered to the Maldives after obtaining their highest qualification.

The Ministry noted that all candidates who meet the eligibility criteria may be nominated; however, the final selection will be made by BUET. Details of expenses covered under the scholarship are outlined in the information sheet attached to the announcement, while any additional costs will be borne by the student. 

Candidates nominated by the Ministry must complete BUET’s “Application Form for Foreign Students” and submit it to the Ministry by 8 February. All submitted documents must be certified true copies.

Applications must be submitted via the government’s online education portal, myedu.egov.mv, before 1:30pm on Thursday, 29 January. Further information is available on the Ministry’s website or by calling 1474, while clarification requests may be sent via email to schol@mohe.gov.mv.
