The announcement coincides with preparations for the annual Fishermen’s Day celebrations, scheduled for 10 December. The awards aim to acknowledge individuals currently working in the Maldivian fisheries industry.
The three awards include the Young Skipper Award, for sailors under 35; the Veteran Skipper Award, for those over 35; and the Reef Fishermen Award, for fishermen whose primary income comes from reef fishing activities.
Nominations can be submitted by industry members or third parties. All forms must be submitted by 14:00 on 23 October, with application forms available on the Ministry’s official website.
The awards form part of broader government efforts to develop and modernise the fishing industry. These include expanding regional ice-making and fish-cooling facilities, providing subsidised fuel, and assisting fishermen in acquiring modern equipment, with the aim of boosting both local fish production and export capacity.
