The Ministry of Education has opened applications for stipends under the National Teacher Training Programme, aimed at encouraging secondary school leavers to enter the teaching profession.
Stipends are available for students undertaking primary-level training in Dhivehi and Islamic subjects.
Students enrolled in a first-degree teaching programme at Maldivian universities and colleges in designated fields will receive a monthly stipend of MVR 1,500. Applicants must be under 40 years of age, commence their courses after 1 January 2025, and be enrolled in a Maldivian university or college.
The programme seeks to develop a pool of trained and qualified local teachers to address a significant shortage in the education system. The Ministry reports that more than 2,400 teachers are currently required, including 250 for primary grades.
The initiative follows a pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to implement a nationwide teacher training programme. The programme is scheduled to launch next month, according to the Minister of Education, Dr Ismail Shafeeu.
Applications for the stipends will remain open until 2 October 2025.
