The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has ordered the renewal of expired permits for worksites registered to bring foreign workers to the Maldives, as part of efforts to strengthen oversight of expatriate employment.
The ministry stated that it is working to improve the permit system and monitoring mechanisms. From Tuesday, worksites registered on a project basis will be converted to pending site clearance status, while sites that have not utilised their allocated quotas for more than a year will be made inactive from next week.
All worksites with expired permits have been instructed to renew their registrations and update required documents through the Xpat system.
Authorities are also intensifying efforts to regularise foreign workers and address illegal employment. Immigration and police are carrying out joint operations targeting undocumented expatriates and businesses operating without valid authorisation, resulting in the closure of several businesses and the detention of multiple individuals.
The ministry has announced a three-month grace period beginning this month, allowing foreign workers without valid permits or with expired documents to obtain proper authorisation.
