The Ministry of Housing and Construction has ordered the cancellation of an announcement issued by the GDh. Thinadhoo City Council, which invited contractors to build 200 housing units on the island.

The directive was sent on Thursday, a day after the council’s announcement. Earlier this week, the council launched an online portal for residents and prospective migrants to submit applications for the housing units, with the process set to remain open until April. However, the announcement remains on the government gazette.

In a letter signed by Deputy Minister Hassan Vishal and addressed to Thinadhoo Mayor Saud, the ministry instructed the council to cancel the process. The letter stated that the ministry holds the mandate to construct, allocate, and oversee government-built housing units.

The ministry outlined that housing units are allocated in accordance with its regulations. It also clarified that the 200 housing units being developed in Thinadhoo fall under its jurisdiction, requiring its oversight in the application process.

According to the ministry, the council had initiated the application process without obtaining prior approval. Consequently, the council has been directed to cancel the announcement and seek the ministry’s endorsement before proceeding with the allocation of housing units.
