The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has re-announced its search for a contractor to carry out renovation work at the cat shelter, Olhu Hiyaa.
The ministry had initially issued a call last month seeking a contractor to undertake repairs and renovations to the facility’s Isolation Unit, General Holding Area, toilets, office and guardroom. However, the ministry stated in a fresh announcement that the cost estimates submitted in response to the earlier notice exceeded the budget allocated for the project.
As a result, the ministry has reopened the bidding process and invited new cost submissions. The deadline for submitting revised estimates has been set for 5 March.
Olhu Hiyaa was originally developed under the management of the Malé City Council, which also covered the cost of its construction. The Cabinet later decided to transfer operational responsibility of the shelter to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.
The facility was built at a reported cost of MVR 30 million and has the capacity to house up to 3,000 cats. At present, the shelter is caring for 258 cats.
