In addition to the study, the ministry is also seeking a contractor to develop a teacher handbook designed to raise awareness among students about the environmental impact of plastic use. The handbook will also provide guidance on developing sustainable business models and strategies to eliminate single-use plastics.

The Maldives launched its single-use plastic phase-out plan during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. So far, 13 plastic items have been banned under the initiative, with the final item—small plastic water bottles—set to be prohibited starting next year.

During Environment Day celebrations held in Ukulhas in 2023, President Solih reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving a zero-plastic Maldives by 2030, underscoring the need for public awareness and institutional collaboration to reach this goal.
