Ministry Signs With WAMCO to Establish Waste Management Systems in 32 Islands

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment signed with Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) yesterday to develop waste management systems in 32 islands of the Maldives. 

In a press release, the ministry said this was part of their effort under “Magey Saafu Raajje Program,” meaning My Clean Maldives Program, to fulfil President Dr Mohame Muizzu’s pledge to ensure appropriate waste management systems are in place in all islands of the nation. He made the pledge last month during his presidential address on the first parliamentary session of the new term.

Yesterday, the ministry signed with WAMCO to develop new waste management systems in 19 islands, and to upgrade the existing infrastructure of 13 islands.  Previously, the ministry had signed with WAMCO to develop new waste management systems in Meedhoo and Hulhudheli of Dhaalu Atoll last month. 

With the newly signed contracts, WAMCO is developing or upgrading the waste management systems of 34 islands this year. The ministry said they will be completed by the third quarter of the year.

To ensure all inhabited islands in the country have appropriate waste management systems, the ministry estimates they will have to establish or upgrade existing infrastructure of waste management systems in 128 islands. The ministry is working to start these projects within the year, with other state institutions as well, they said.
