The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has commenced the process of clearing and marking boundaries for plots allocated to individuals in Gulhifalhu under the Binnveriyaa housing scheme.

The project, initiated in July last year, follows the allocation of plots first announced by the previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government. While the earlier plan provided 2,000 plots, the current administration increased the number to 3,520, including requests from recipients wishing to transfer land from Giravaru lagoon to Gulhifalhu.

According to the Ministry, 1,260 individuals have received land registrations since the process began on 12 July last year. Registrations are being issued at the former Housing Ministry building, in the section previously used by the city council.

The government had earlier awarded dredging work in Gulhifalhu to Dutch company Boskalis at a cost of USD 120 million (MVR 2 billion). The land use plan for the area has since been amended twice by the current administration, with registrations now being issued following a re-draw held on 30 May.
