Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) files a case with the Maldives Police Service (MPS) requesting a probe into remarks made by MP for Inguraidhoo constituency, Ibrahim Falah, calling for the “violent execution” of journalists instead of sentencing them to prison.

During yesterday’s out-of-term parliamentary session, Falah, the Parliamentary Majority Leader for the People’s National Congress (PNC), spoke on the floor of Parliament in support of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill. He cited personal grievances, claiming that he had previously been targeted by false reports, including allegations of homosexual relationships based on images of lookalikes. He said journalists who maintain such standards do not deserve to be imprisoned, but rather need to be impaled.

In a press statement today, the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) condemned Falah’s remarks, saying they could incite violence against journalists and media workers. The association also described his comments as irresponsible, noting that he holds a position of power and authority.

“It is a narrative that will disrupt societal harmony and undermine the nation,” MJA said in their statement.

Therefore, they have filed a case with the police, asking them to investigate the case where Falah called for the incitement of violence towards journalists.
