Dr Mahmood Shaugee, Chancellor of the Maldives National University (MNU), attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest. The conference has brought together local and international researchers, representatives from financial institutions, and stakeholders from economic and financial technology sectors.

During the inaugural session, keynote speeches were delivered by Maldives Governor Ahmed Munawar, MNU’s Chancellor Dr Mahmood Shaugee, and the Deputy Governor of India. Governor Munawar emphasised the significance of evidence-based research in policymaking, while Chancellor Shaugee highlighted the need for collaboration among government authorities in advancing economic research.

As part of the proceedings, Dr Shaugee also inaugurated the MMA Research Fund, which aims to support and encourage researchers. The fund was launched with an initial allocation of MVR 1 million and is open to contributions from both local and international donors to ensure its expansion.

Additionally, two memorandums of understanding (MOUs) were signed at the event. The first, with Malaysia’s Universiti Islam Selangor, seeks to foster collaboration in economic research, education, and innovation. The second, with telecommunications provider Dhiraagu, focuses on leveraging technology and innovation to advance sustainable research efforts.

Saturday’s sessions featured two panel discussions. The first explored developments in financial technology, while the second examined the impacts of climate change on the Maldives, particularly in relation to shifts in global energy production.

Three research papers were presented during the day. The first examined wealth disparities and inflation across the Maldives, the second analysed the impact of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on consumer prices, and the third explored trends in housing rental prices in the Malé region.

The conference will conclude on Sunday with a series of workshops, providing further opportunities for participants to engage in collaborative learning and dialogue.
