The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has launched the Tamweel FinLit Fest 2025, a festival dedicated to promoting financial literacy, responsible money management, and Islamic finance across the country.

The event was inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Dr Ismail Shafeeu. The festival aims to foster a society proficient in Islamic finance by engaging students, youth, and the wider community. It features six main activities: the Finlit Challenge, Econquest Debate Tournament, Impact Pitch Challenge, an essay competition titled Future Finance, the Values and Vision Art Competition, and a Short Video Making Competition.

These activities are designed not only to encourage creativity and innovative thinking but also to promote a broader understanding of financial management as a tool for social and economic progress rather than merely a technical skill.

The MMA Tamweel Finlit Challenge is a league-style quiz targeting young people aged 18 to 25. It tests participants’ knowledge on topics such as saving, budgeting, halal investing, risk-sharing, and the fundamentals of the Islamic financial system, providing an engaging environment to develop practical skills.

The EconQuest Debate Competition offers participants aged 16 to 25 the chance to debate key economic issues, including sustainable development, inclusive societies, and global economic growth. The event encourages young people to propose innovative solutions to national and international challenges, enhancing their civic awareness.

The Impact Pitch Challenge focuses on encouraging innovative Sharia-compliant solutions to improve financial literacy in the Maldives. Open to participants over 18, it invites ideas for developing financial literacy tools, creating inclusive financial services for underserved communities, and exploring fintech applications in Islamic finance. Shortlisted candidates will present their ideas at a bootcamp on 15 November, with winners receiving cash prizes of up to USD 1,945, business funding, collaboration opportunities, and access to training programmes.

The festival also promotes creative expression through the Future Finance essay competition for school students, allowing them to share their perspectives on the financial sector. The Values and Vision Art Competition offers young artists a platform to envision a fair and equitable financial system through art. Additionally, the Short Video Making Competition invites participants to produce brief videos aimed at raising awareness of financial literacy and Islamic finance.

The MMA emphasises that the Tamweel FinLit Fest supports its vision to equip Maldivians, particularly the youth, with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the modern financial landscape. Updates about the festival will be available on the MMA’s website and official social media channels.
