The Maldives National Defence Force has commenced its annual fire prevention week, an awareness drive organised by its Fire and Rescue Service in preparation for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.

The programme will be conducted from 31 January to 7 February. Fire prevention week is held annually to disseminate essential information and safety guidelines on preventing fire incidents in an effective and accessible manner.

A special ceremony to mark the start of the awareness drive was held at Aminiya School and was attended by Deputy Minister of Defence Fathimath Mizna Ali.

The Deputy Minister stated that the initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of building a safe society and noted that the programme has been expanded to be conducted nationwide, whereas previous editions were limited to Male’. She emphasised that while institutions remain prepared to respond to fire incidents, safeguarding against such situations is a civic responsibility.

She highlighted that civic responsibility plays a central role in preventing fire-related incidents and stressed the importance of citizens being aware of the safety conditions within their surroundings. She added that the programme is designed to raise public awareness of common fire risks and to equip individuals with knowledge on how to manage such situations.

Under the initiative, information will be shared on common causes of fire incidents, including electrical short circuits and kitchen-related fires. Participants will be provided with guidance on safety protocols and emergency response procedures. The Maldives National Defence Force also noted that participants will be trained in handling fire incidents using basic assistive equipment such as fire blankets.

The programme will also extend to schools, with information sessions planned for students from Grades 7 to 12. School staff and parents have been identified as key target groups, and awareness sessions will also be conducted in community spaces.

In the Greater Male’ area, the programme will be carried out at Aminiya School, Muhiyudheen School, Rehendhi School and Salahuddin School.
