The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue Service has launched this year’s Jarraafa exercise, its annual fire and rescue training programme, yesterday.

First introduced in 2013, Jarraafa is designed to test the MNDF Fire Emergency Operations Plan and strengthen firefighting capabilities, particularly in high-rise environments. The exercise also evaluates how firefighters apply their knowledge, skills, and resources to manage large and complex incidents.

The drills involve participation from multiple agencies, with state institutions and private organisations, including the National Disaster Management Authority, local hospitals, and the Maldives Red Crescent, working alongside MNDF units to support coordinated responses to emergencies.

Training is taking place on Sunday and Monday across Male’, Hulhumale’, Villimale’, Thilafushi, and the waters near Male’ City. Fire lorries with sirens will be deployed on the streets as part of the exercises.

Scenarios being practised include high-rise fires, rescue operations, hazardous material incidents, and road accidents. The programme also places emphasis on problem-solving and enhancing the speed of emergency services.

The MNDF Fire and Rescue Service, which holds civil defence responsibilities in the Maldives, considers Jarraafa to be a central component of its annual preparedness activities.
