The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard ship Dharumavantha and the MNDF Air Corps have launched a special surveillance operation to monitor the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the southern part of the Maldives.

The MNDF said the operation will cover an area extending up to 200 nautical miles south of the Maldives from the baseline.

The announcement follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s statement on Thursday detailing government efforts to strengthen the Coast Guard’s capacity and protect the nation’s EEZ.

New Naval Ships, Patrol Craft, and Air Station to Boost Maldives’ Maritime Security

Addressing national defence, the President said the Coast Guard’s capacity will be doubled, with 17 additional interceptor craft and a new naval ship to be commissioned this year. Funding has also been secured for two harbour craft patrol vessels, and the second MNDF Air Station in Sh. Funadhoo will become operational in 2026. He added that special priority will be given to fire and rescue services, emergency operations, operational logistics, personnel accommodation, and administrative governance throughout the year.

On the maritime boundary dispute, President Muizzu said legal proceedings have begun to reclaim maritime territory lost following the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) ruling. He announced the rescission of a letter sent by the former President to the Prime Minister of Mauritius on 22 August 2022.

Referencing the archipelagic baselines defined in the Maritime Zones Act, the President reaffirmed that the Maldives’ EEZ remains as defined by law, including the disputed territory. He added that, based on advice from international experts, an office will be established to address matters relating to national territories.

President Muizzu also said that, acting under Article 115(o) of the Constitution, a Commission of Inquiry will be formed to investigate the decisions of the previous administration, ensure legal accountability where necessary, and establish safeguards to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
