The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has said that they had intercepted two foreign vessels suspected of illegal fishing in Maldivian waters, yesterday.
In a statement posted on X, the MNDF stated that the two vessels were apprehended for allegedly attempting to fish within the Maldives’ Special Economic Zone, contravening existing regulations.
Further specifics regarding the identity or origin of the vessels were not provided by the MNDF.
This incident follows a similar occurrence in September 2023, where five Sri Lankan vessels were apprehended for purportedly engaging in fishing activities within the Maldives’ Special Economic Zone. Subsequently, these vessels were fined MVR 100,000.
The MNDF’s actions underscore the nation’s commitment to enforcing maritime regulations and protecting its marine resources from illegal exploitation.
