The Maldives National Party (MNP) has seen its representation in parliament diminish following the resignation of Ahmed Usham, the party’s Member of Parliament for the Villiamale’ constituency.
MNP, which previously boasted three members in parliament including Abdulla Riyaz representing Thimarafushi and Mohamed Nazim representing Dhan’gethi, now faces a loss of parliamentary presence due to Usham’s decision to step down.
Usham’s resignation is attributed to his acceptance of the position of Attorney General in the newly formed administration.
The party’s right to parliamentary representation, contingent upon having a minimum of three members in the legislative body, has been revoked with Usham’s departure.
During today’s parliamentary session, Speaker Mohamed Aslam clarified that, as per the regulations of the parliament, a party forfeits its right to representation if its members fall below the stipulated threshold of three. Consequently, Riyaz and Nazim will now be recognised as independent members by the parliament.
Adding to the dynamics of the parliament, it was revealed that former independent MP Ibrahim Naseem, representing Thulusdhoo constituency, has joined the People’s National Congress (PNC).
