Motorcycle Collisions Dominate Weekly Road Accidents in Malé

Motorcycle-related crashes accounted for the largest share of road accidents reported last week, as traffic police recorded 43 incidents across Malé, the Sinamalé Bridge and the highway between 8 and 14 February.
According to statistics released by traffic police, Malé recorded 37 of the reported cases, representing 86 per cent of the total.
Motorcycle collisions featured prominently in the data. Police recorded seven motorcycle-to-motorcycle crashes and seven motorcycle-to-car collisions during the week. Additional incidents involved motorcycles colliding with vans, pick-up trucks, buses and pedestrians.
The highest number of accidents in a single day was recorded on 8 February, when 10 incidents were reported. Overall, most accidents occurred during daytime hours, accounting for 31 cases, or 72 per cent of the total. Twelve accidents were recorded at night.

Malé, Bridge and Highway
A total of 43 road accidents were reported across Malé, the bridge, and the highway during this period. Malé accounted for the majority, with 37 cases recorded.

Of the 43 reported cases, 41 resulted in minor injuries, while two accidents led to serious injury. Police also recorded 16 injuries to individuals during the week, while 50 cases involved damage to vehicles.
The statistics further show that six accidents occurred on the bridge and highway, while the majority were concentrated within the capital.
Traffic police reminded road users to remain alert, adhere to traffic regulations and exercise caution while driving, particularly in busy urban areas.

Motorcycles remain the most common mode of transport in Malé, often navigating congested roads shared with cars, vans, buses and pedestrians.
