The government has enforced a ban on motorised vessels in the channel linking Hulhumalé Phase I and Phase II, effective yesterday.

The decision follows the Housing Development Corporation’s (HDC) earlier announcement on Monday, with the restriction aimed at ensuring the safety of swimmers and recreational users who frequent the location. The channel is a popular spot for both children and adults and is often used for watersports activities such as jet skiing and banana boat rides.

HDC also highlighted that the ban will support its planned coral planting programme in the area, which could be disrupted by vessel activity. In addition, the Corporation is undertaking broader environmental initiatives, including tree planting across Hulhumalé.

The channel connecting the two phases of Hulhumalé measures 50 metres in width and 1.85 metres in depth.
