Majority leader of the ruling party, People’s National Congress (PNC), MP Ibrahim Falah has accused the previous government of unlawfully agreeing to release part of Maldives’ maritime territory, describing the action as treason punishable by life imprisonment.
Speaking during a parliamentary session yesterday, Inguraidhoo MP Falah, said the Maldivian Constitution defines the country’s territory as including land, airspace and the seabed within legally established baselines. He added that any decision affecting these areas requires parliamentary approval.
Falah alleged that the administration of former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had agreed to give up a portion of Maldives’ waters to Mauritius without submitting the matter to Parliament.
“These people have sold a large share of Maldives without the approval of Parliament,” Falah said, describing the move as corruption and treason against the state. “This is exactly what comes with a life sentence. Life imprisonment. This is treason. This is treason to the country.”
The comments follow previous criticism by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who has also raised concerns about the maritime agreement. Speaking at the launch of the “Greater Addu Vision” initiative, Muizzu said part of the country’s sea had been lost due to deliberate actions by the former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government. He described the decision to spend MVR 37 million and release a large portion of the sea as detrimental to national interests.
The President added that international experts consulted by the current administration while exploring ways to recover the maritime area had questioned why the previous government pursued a course that could harm the country. Muizzu said his administration had decided to withdraw the letter sent by the Solih government to Mauritius, calling it a betrayal.
