Ruling Party MP Hussain Shareef has warned that Maldives could soon be “full of half-Maldivians” due to Maldivians marrying migrants from other south asian countries.

MP Shareef, who represents the North Hulhumale constituency, made these comments today during a debate on a bill amending the Employment Act, aimed at addressing the issue of undocumented migrant workers.

“The people watching ‘Kasauti’ in our living rooms are also migrants. We must be extremely concerned; tomorrow, this country will be full of half-Maldivian, half-Sri Lankan, half-Indian, and half-Bangladeshi individuals,” he stated.

Shareef further lamented what he sees as the erosion of Maldivian culture due to such marriages.

“Even if you look at marriage between two people, our culture and the beautiful way of our Dhivehi life is being lost, and it is our duty to speak up about it today,” he added.

Shareef expressed fears about the future leadership of the country. “We have to think about the kind of person who might come from studies abroad and sit in that chair, telling us what to do tomorrow,” he said, suggesting that future parliament speaker could be of mixed heritage or from abroad.

Shareef’s comments follow a series of inflammatory remarks earlier this week, where he claimed that Bangladeshi migrant workers were dominating all areas of the Maldives.

He controversially stated, “Instead of our wives, the person feeding our husbands after work is also a Bangladeshi man.”
