The Member of Parliament for Ihavandhoo and a member of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group, Mohamed Shifau, emphasised that the impeachment of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is the top priority for the Parliament in today’s parliamentary session.

Shifau made these remarks during the debate on the report of the General Committee of Parliament regarding proposed amendments to the Rules of Procedure. He asserted that the present government lacks legal authority, prompting the need for urgent action.

Shifau cited the recent decisions by the Economic Ministry allowing the importation of Bangladeshi laborers as evidence of the government’s questionable actions. He questioned whether the government, by disregarding constitutional principles, is fit to wield power.

Additionally, Shifau accused the government of influencing Sharia and identified former President Abdullah Yameen as a threat. He linked these concerns to the broader narrative surrounding the current president, Mohamed Muizzu.

The motion to remove President Mohamed Muizzu is expected to be submitted by the opposition MDP parliamentary group, led by Shifau.
