The Maldives Pension Administration Office (MPAO) has urged retirees to notify the office if they take up new employment within the government.

Under recent amendments to pension regulations, retirees who assume positions in the public sector will have their pension payments suspended for the duration of their employment.

The changes, enacted on 30 December 2025, specify that retired employees elected to public office or appointed to roles in state or government-owned companies will not be entitled to receive retirement pensions during their tenure. Pension payments will resume from the month following the conclusion of public service.

The revised rules require retired individuals who return to public or state employment to inform MPAO. Any pension payments received without notification during this period must be repaid to the state. Retirees can submit notification either in writing or by using the designated form provided by MPAO.

State agencies affected by the changes include the Maldives Police Service, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Maldives Customs Service, Maldives Immigration, and Maldives Correctional Service.

Previously, retirees from these organisations could continue receiving pension payments even after taking up elected or other government positions. Following public concern over the practice, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu committed to revising the regulations to end it.
