Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has confirmed that no new fees will be introduced for vessels operating in Malé’s North Harbour, despite the recent expansion of the area.
In a statement shared on X, MPL CEO DCP (Retd) Mohamed Rishwan clarified that the company has not made any decision to impose additional charges beyond those already in place. This statement was made in response to public speculation regarding the fees that would be taken by the company after it expanded the harbour.
“The company has not made any decision to charge any additional fees beyond the ones currently charged in MPL’s North Harbour,” he said.

Rishwan noted that the expanded area is now under MPL’s jurisdiction, and efforts are underway to organise and manage it more effectively. The adjustment aims to improve operational efficiency, particularly for vessels transporting goods to and from the atolls.
He added that the expansion will simplify cargo loading processes and address longstanding concerns regarding unregulated business activities by immigrants in the area. Enhanced oversight, he said, would support both service delivery and area preservation.
As part of the expansion, the North Harbour area now includes the fish market, allowing space for up to 54 vehicles. MPL stated on social media that up to 74 vehicles can operate simultaneously from the expanded harbour.
The development forms part of MPL’s wider strategy to modernise the country’s port infrastructure, improve service delivery, and strengthen security and accessibility across maritime transport networks.
