Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has established a dedicated sheltered area at the Malé Commercial Harbour to expedite the clearance of perishable food items imported ahead of Ramadan.
The 3,000-square-foot shed was constructed amid an increase in vessel arrivals at the harbour, which has led to delays in unloading and processing cargo. The company stated that the additional space is intended to assist traders in clearing perishable goods more efficiently during the busy Ramadan period.
According to MPL, the sheltered facility will provide extra capacity for rapid unloading and temporary storage, enabling faster processing of temperature-sensitive food items.
Mohamed Saeed had previously highlighted concerns raised by traders regarding delays in food shipments caused by space constraints at the commercial port.
The Malé Commercial Harbour, which has been in operation for decades, is undergoing modernisation and operational reorganisation. MPL has already relocated certain activities in an effort to reduce congestion and improve efficiency.
