Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) officially launched its tree planting initiative Yesterday, which forms part of a wider government pledge to plant five million trees.

The launch, marking World Environment Day, was held at the site of the future commercial port in Thilafushi. This initiative aligns with a key commitment outlined in the government’s manifesto.

At a ceremony attended by the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim signed a pledge to plant one million trees over the next five years. The pledge was handed over to Minister Tariq to demonstrate MPL’s commitment to the environment.

In his remarks, CEO Wajeeh highlighted the importance of this programme for environmental preservation and its role in securing a sustainable future for upcoming generations. He noted that all MPL departments, regional ports, local councils, and community organisations would participate in the initiative to ensure widespread participation across the Maldives.

As a first step, MPL has committed to planting 10,000 trees within the first week. Minister Tariq praised MPL’s efforts, describing the pledge as a significant contribution to the broader national goal of planting five million trees and commending MPL’s proactive role as a state-owned enterprise.

In addition to the tree planting, the ceremony also saw the laying of the foundation stone for a temporary mosque at the port construction site. CEO Wajeeh mentioned that this mosque would provide prayer facilities for workers during the construction phase.
