Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has launched a new initiative aimed at expanding employment opportunities for people with disabilities, as part of ongoing national efforts to promote inclusion in the workforce.
The “Fahi Programme – Ekuekee, Gulhigen” was inaugurated on Thursday by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed at a ceremony held in Malé. The initiative supports President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s policy to create income-generating opportunities for people with disabilities across the country.
During the event, the First Lady underscored the importance of initiatives that uphold human dignity and reinforce the principle of equality among all Maldivians. She highlighted the challenges faced by people with disabilities and called for a shift in public attitudes, urging greater respect, encouragement, and support to ensure they can pursue meaningful work with dignity.
Social and Family Development Minister Dr Aishath Shiham also attended the ceremony and introduced a new accessibility feature on MPL’s website, designed to improve access to information and services.
MPL reported that 40 people with disabilities have been employed under the Fahi Programme to date, with 32 currently working across various departments within the company.
President Muizzu has previously pledged to increase public sector employment opportunities for people with disabilities as part of his wider social development agenda.
